Yesterday, on 6th of April, an innovative new community hub, named “Ukrainian New York”, was opened in the village of Novhorodske, Donetsk region.

The social hub in Novhorodske is designed to unite the local community, be a place to set up public organizations, study the history of the village, and find ways to further develop it.

As well as serving as a base for organizing local initiatives and organizations, the community hub will operate as a psychological health centre, a media centre and an educational centre for training community residents on human rights, the development of soft skills (such as leadership, teamwork, and communications) and setting up youth initiatives.

The Danish Ambassador to Ukraine Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, in his video address at the opening ceremony, said Denmark was proud to be among the donor partners for the new community centre.

"With this new community centre, the citizens of Novhorodske will have a place where they can come together and exercise local democracy, conduct educational activities and carry out working group meetings for community development, training, workshops and youth projects. The new centre will support local democracy, civil society and community life. These are core values for Ukraine’s transformation and the activities will bring these values to life", the Ambassador emphasised.

The full version of the Ambassador's speech can be found here.

To create the new centre, a partnership was formed between the local community, international development agencies, and private business in the region. Almost half of the funds was provided by UNHCR and UNDP, supported by the governments of Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden via the United Nations Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme.
