Denmark's business community and civil society are keen on helping to rebuild Ukraine

The government held the first meeting of the Ukraine Investment Forum on 26th of May 2023. The goal of this Forum is to help Danish companies get involved in specific reconstruction projects in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine causes vast destruction that leads to an acute and ongoing demand to rebuild the country. To this end, the Danish government has established a Ukraine Fund of app. DKK 7 billion in 2023 to contribute to the reconstruction.

As part of the Ukraine Fund, a government loan and guarantee scheme has been established via the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) with a capital of DKK 1 billion. The loan and guarantee programme provides long-term loans and guarantees for Danish exports and investments in Ukraine.

The Ukraine Fund also commits DKK 170 million for investments in public critical infrastructure via Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) and investments in key private sectors through the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU). In addition, a number of other business initiatives have been launched under the Ukraine Fund, such as the strengthening of the MFA's business-oriented advisory services.

The war-torn Ukraine presents a challenge for Danish companies to get an overview of the best ways they can contribute to the reconstruction of the country. For this reason, the Danish government has established the Ukraine Investment Forum. The purpose of the forum is to share information about specific projects and market opportunities in Ukraine and to provide contacts to Ukrainian partners. A large number of Danish exporting companies, the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, the Investment Fund for Developing Countries, Danish Sustainable Infrastructure Finance, Ukrainian authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs have all joined the Ukraine Investment Forum.

First meeting took place on 26 May 2023 in Industriens Hus. Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Minister for Business Morten Bødskov and Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen, as well as top-level members of the Ukrainian government and more than 100 Danish companies took part in the meeting.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Business and Industry and the Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy also hosted the first meeting of the Government's Monitoring Group for the Ukraine Fund. Here, a number of business organisations, companies, private foundations and civil society organisations participated in a strategic discussion of the priorities under the Ukraine Fund.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen said:

"Today is a milestone for Denmark's efforts to rebuild Ukraine. An important Ukraine Day that sets the course for our work to rebuild the country. Danish companies are important partners when it comes to dealing with a new foreign and security policy reality and solving global challenges. This also applies to Ukraine. Therefore, it is crucial that we engage the companies that will develop specific, sustainable solutions for the reconstruction."

Minister for Business Morten Bødskov says:

"The Danish business community is fully committed to the reconstruction of Ukraine. We stand side by side with Ukraine in the cruel war and will continue to support Ukraine's fight for freedom and independence. That is why we have now established the Ukraine Investment Forum, which will give Danish companies the opportunity to connect with Ukrainian partners and thus contribute to the reconstruction of the country. I look forward to start this work so that we can make a real difference for Ukraine."

Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen says:

"With the Ukraine Fund, we will create tangible results for the Ukrainians. We need to get schools up and running again, ensure water and heat supply. And of course we must ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the people who need it. But we also need to seriously kick-start long-term aid to rebuild Ukraine. This is where we in Denmark will prioritise the reforms. It's about green energy and transition, and it's about fighting corruption. Ukrainians want a greener and fairer country, and we will help to achieve this."
