Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen Awarded in Mykolaiv

During the celebration of the Mykolaiv City Day on September 9th, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych awarded the ambassador with the Honorary Distinction “For services to the City of Mykolaiv”.

Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen became the first diplomat serving in Ukraine ever to be honoured with this award. 

After the handover the ambassador underlined: “It is not an award for me personally, even though I am immensely proud to receive it. It is first and foremost an award for the government and people of Denmark, the tireless staff of the embassy of Denmark, good colleagues at the ministry of foreign affairs in Copenhagen and not least Danish and international humanitarian organisations, who have all been instrumental in making the Denmark-Mykolaiv partnership a great success under very difficult circumstances”.

It should be noted that this partnership is a unique model of cooperation that evolved between a country on one hand and a city and region on the other hand, following the request by President Zelensky in March 2022. Ever since, the Kingdom of Denmark has supported Mykolaiv city and region in various ways within a wide spectrum of activities, from particle board to drinking water, from agricultural projects to cultural events.

According to the ambassador, “We cannot wait for peace and a big plan for the reconstruction. We need to start now and this is what we have done in Mykolaiv. Danes are proud to be the partners of the “City of Heroes”.
