30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE COPENHAGEN CRITERIA FOR EU-MEMBERSHIP

Today, the Copenhagen Criteria continue to constitute a central element in the EU enlargement process.

The Copenhagen Criteria for EU-membership were adopted in Copenhagen on 21-22 June 1993 by the European Council. These criteria define a broad set of rules spanning from democracy, rule of law and human rights, to market economy and the ability of countries to effectively implement the EU acquis.

On 28 June, the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen will be hosting a conference to commemorate and mark the 30 year anniversary of the Copenhagen Criteria. The conference will bring together past and present high-level officials from Denmark, the EU and current candidate countries, as well as representatives from academia to discuss the future perspectives of EU-enlargement.
