DENMARK AND UKRAINE SIGNED A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON WATER AND ENVIRONMENT

On April 29, 2025, the Minister for Environment and Gender Equality of Denmark, Mr. Magnus Heunicke, and the Minister for Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ms. Svitlana Grynchuk, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Water and Environment. The signing took place on the sidelines of the informal Environment Council Meeting in Warsaw, Poland.

The Memorandum of Understanding provides an overall framework for bilateral cooperation in the environmental and water sectors. It aims to support the sustainable recovery of Ukraine through collaboration which includes the four key technical areas:

  1. Water Resources Management, including groundwater monitoring and data systems.
  2. Water Supply Infrastructure, focusing on restoration and modernization efforts.
  3. Wastewater Treatment, with the goal of improving system efficiency and introducing modern technologies.
  4. Pollution Control, including mechanisms for managing industrial and agricultural pollutants.

Denmark has committed to supporting Ukraine with technical expertise, strategic planning, and knowledge sharing in each of these areas. The MoU builds on the countries’ previous cooperation and contributes to aligning Ukraine’s environmental governance with European directives and standards.

Discussions during the bilateral meeting also touched on broader support for reforming Ukraine’s water sector and the importance of involving the private sector to attract investment in water-related infrastructure projects.

The agreement further strengthens existing ties between Denmark and Ukraine and sets the foundation for a  long-term cooperation on sustainability and environmental resilience.
