EUROPEAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE DANISH PARLIAMENT VISITED KYIV

A Folketing delegation consisting of different political parties visited Kyiv on February 26th at the invitation of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada.

Danish MPs also had an intense meeting with their Ukrainian peers from the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) from across the political spectrum, to hear their perspective on the status of parliamentary democracy in Ukraine and to take stock of Ukraine’s remarkable progress on the European path.

The delegation also conducted a substantial dialogue with Vice Prime Minister O. Kubrakov regarding Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, urgent needs and challenges.

The delegation also assisted at a briefing delivered by Allan Pagh Kristensen, Head of EU Anti-Corruption Initiative, regarding the status of anti-corruption efforts. They also met with Ukrainian media, investigative journalists and civil society to discuss recent developments pertaining to freedom of speech in Ukraine.

The city of Kyiv city was in focus as well. MPs saw the residential building located in the Solomiansky district that had been damaged in the course of the Russian missile attack on January 2nd. The MPs walked inside the building to witness the destruction as closely as possible; deputy mayor Vyacheslav Nepop and head of the Solomyansky district council Iryna Chechotka shared their insights about the work that the Kyiv municipality and partners has conducted in the aftermath of the attack.

Finally, the delegation paid a visit to the iconic Maidan Square, the site of the Revolution of Dignity, the so-called “EuroMaidan”, driven by Ukraine’s European aspirations ten years ago. The square is also where Ukrainians are mourning the fallen heroes, who lost their life defending freedom.
