HAPPY CONSTITUTION DAY!
Today we celebrate the fact that Denmark has been a democracy for 175 years, safeguarding basic rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to vote.
Did you know that when Denmark got its Constitutional Act “disreputable men over 30 with their own household, who did not receive or had received social benefits" were the only ones allowed to vote? It added up to only 15% of the population at that time.
Fortunately, a lot has happened since:
- In 1915, women and servants got the right to vote.
- Today every Danish citizen above the age of 18, who is permanently domiciled in Denmark and has not been declared incapable of conducting his og her own affairs, is entitled to vote.
Denmark's constitution is one of the oldest in the world, as it turns 175 years.
