Minister for Cities and Rural Districts, Ecclesiastical Affairs and Nordic Cooperation visited Ukraine
Minister Morten Dahlin was in Kyiv and Borodianka on May 12 and 13
The Minister had an audience with Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine. He assured His Eminence that Ukraine’s fight for freedom has a great support from the Danish population, Danish Parliament and Danish government. The Minister also met with a broad assembly of Ukraine’s religious leaders from different faiths convened within the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religions Organizations to discuss the current status of freedom of faith in Ukraine as an important component of the European set of values. The Minister also met with a group of field priests who shared valuable insights about their difficult and important mission. The Minister also attended service both at the Saint Michael’s Golden Domed Cathedral of the Orthodox Church and at Saint Catherine’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church.
On a more secular note, the Minister met with Mustafa Nayyem, head of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development and had working lunch with a group of MPs from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The conversations touched upon a broad range of topics from fighting corruption to strategies of recovery and the current state of democracy in Ukraine.
During a field trip to the village of Borodianka in Kyiv Region, the Minister witnessed the traces of the destruction caused by the Russian invasion and heard the interim Head of the Village Council Ms Iryna Zakharchenko, as well as the members of the local community, share bitter memories from early months of 2022. The minister also saw the results of the recovery efforts undertaken by UNHCR with financial support from Denmark.
Back in Kyiv, the Minister paid a visit to the Ukrainian Danish Youth House where he met young Ukrainian activists and artists who receive support from Denmark. He also took a walk around Kyiv’s iconic Maidan square and laid flowers at the memory wall of the servicemen who laid down their lives defending Ukraine from the Russian aggression at St. Michael’s Square.
